Tokyo 2020 Olympic Medals Are Made From Recycled Phones Donated By People

Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals are made of recycled waste from mobile phones and electronic devices.

The medals were created through the efforts of the people of Japan who donated their unwanted mobile phones and small electronic devices to fund the materials needed to create approximately 5000 medals for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The metals were extracted from almost 80,000 tons of electronic waste including more than 6 million mobile phones that were collected over a two-year period to make 100% of the sustainable medals. Who knew gadgets would include everything needed to make the medals.

According to Tokyo 2020, the recycled devices collected throughout Japan included 32kg of gold, 3,500kg of silver, and 2,200kg of bronze. The process involved sorting, dismantling, smelting and moulding the medals that reflect the themes of light, brilliance, diversity, hard work, and friendship.
