This Trash-Collecting Vessel Skims the Ocean for Plastic Using Its Huge Retractable Arms

This is the 4Ocean Mobile Skimmer, a robust trash-collecting vessel that skims the waterways to gather and removes plastic and other debris. This super-effective skimmer measures slightly over 22 feet long and is built with huge retractable arms that give the vessel a wingspan of almost 13 feet.

Its game-changing retractable arms funnel plastic and other debris under the front of the skimmer. Then the trash is picked up by a conveyor belt that sends it up the track and into a large “super sack,” which is often filled with fragments of plastic lighters, toothbrushes, water bottles, pens, baby bottles, cell phones, and plastic bags.

When the “super sack” is full, the crew removes it off of the crane that’s attached to the deck of the skimmer. Then the sack is simply replaced with a new one and the cleaning process resumes. The 4Ocean Mobile Skimmer is manned by a small crew in Southeast Florida, yet its clean-up is substantial.
