This ‘Stingray’ Drone Swims, Ice-skates and Embarks on Surveillance Missions

Pliant Energy Systems’ Velox robot is a drone and a generator that goes on surveillance missions by land and by sea. This string-ray-looking beauty of a bot is an impressive swimmer than can also leave the water and travel across sand, pebbles, paving, grass – and even ice.

Using its pair of undulating “fins,” Velox shows off its multiple modes of locomotion – from ‘swimming like a stingray, crawling like a millipede, jetting like a squid, and sliding like a snake.’ When operated underwater, Velox can instantly reverse direction and quickly turn. This rapid maneuvering is ideal for a coral reef inspection or dragon fish hunting.

Considered a highly maneuverable autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Velox seamlessly transitions from land to sea, which makes it perfect for surf zone, amphibious beach missions, and polar ice missions. It can also be an ice-rescue robot for towing a rope and lifebuoy to a victim who has fallen through thin ice.
