This Non-Lethal Coast Guard ‘Canon’ Shoots Out Rope and Brings Pirates’ Boats to a Halt

This is the Buccaneer Light Weight Interceptor (LWI), a non-lethal “canon” that deploys rope that entangles, disables, and intercepts boats suspected of narcotics trafficking, piracy or terrorist acts. Developed by BCB International and used by Coast Guards around the world to defend cargo ships, the Buccaneer LWI is an advanced development of the Buccaneer Anti-Piracy System.

Not only can the Buccaneer LWI fire projectiles to disable a vessel, but it can also deploy floating smoke or flare cylinders for target marking, screening, or warning purposes. These tactics also add to the severity of the situation without inflicting violence.

With a range of up to about 650 feet, the Buccaneer is very flexible having a 360-degree rotation. It shoots an arrester line that tangles up a pirate’s or a narcoterrorist’s boat motor. Operated remotely from the bridge or control room, the Buccaneer LWI is speedy and safe – without explosives or pyrotechnics.
