Finnish clean-energy company, Fortum, has developed Fortum Vipu (Virus Prevention Unit), a sustainable, hands-free, infection-preventing door handle made of Fortum Circo recycled plastic in an effort to combat Coronavirus. Supermarket shoppers can place their forearm into a rounded level and easily pull open the doors of fridges and freezers – no hands needed!
The 3D-printed Fortum Vipu (Virus Prevention Unit) devices are being trialed at select Alepa supermarkets (the biggest retail chain in Finland) in Helsinki and could be more widely distributed in the near future. The trial period kicked off on Monday, April 20th. Fortum Circo is produced from post-consumer plastic waste and can be used in household appliances as well as industrial and commercial products.

Fortum Vipu’s design was developed by Fortum, reportedly the biggest manufacturer of recycled plastic in the Nordics, and its agency, TBWA\Helsinki. In only five weeks, the two entities came up with the entire product design process.
