This German supermarket rescues and resells still-edible food that’s discarded by other supermarkets.
Sirplus is a Berlin-based anti-food waste start-up that saves unattractive food products other grocery stores refuse to sell. They resell the rejected foodstuffs in one of their four stores or through their website at an 80 percent price reduction than the regular supermarket prices.

The produce comes from farmers, wholesalers, restaurants and other supermarkets, and includes food that’s near expiry, expired, mislabeled or looks ugly. SirPlus inspects every item to ensure it’s safe to eat as food past its expiry date can still be sold in Germany if it’s safe to consume.
In Europe, 50% of edible food is thrown away, which could feed all the hungry people multiple times. In 2019, SirPlus saved more than 2000 tons of this food waste from landing in the trash – which equals to 5,000,000 meals! It’s solutions like these that make the world a better place.
