This collapsible, biodegradable bike helmet developed for bike share is made of waterproof paper in a unique radial honeycomb pattern. Appropriately named the EcoHelmet, this innovative and eco-friendly design can be used by bike sharers and then recycled after use. It’s convenient, sanitary and green – and can even be purchased right from a vending machine for under $5!
Its flat, folded design makes it ideal for vending machines with no assembly required. All you have to do is place it on your head, pull down the straps and clip! The stretchy material conforms to most head sizes and offers protection from impact (from any direction) as a regular bike helmet would. It’s also rain-resistant for up to three hours thanks to its biodegradable coating.

The EcoHelmet is the brainchild of designer Isis Shiffer who won the James Dyson Award in 2016 for her impressive design. An avid traveler and a bike share enthusiast, Shiffer wanted to give commuters and tourists a safer way to cycle and sightsee.
Bike share programs are most popular in bustling cities where the probability of a crash is higher. However, wearing a helmet can reduce the chance of injury or death by 85 percent.
