This Drone Reforestation Project Is On A Mission To Plant A Billion Trees

This is Flash Forest, a Canadian reforestation company that uses drone engineering to plant at ten times the normal rate and at 20% of the cost of traditional tree planting techniques. By modifying drones to fire rapidly germinating tree seeds into the soil, Flash Forest introduces higher levels of accuracy, precision, and speed to the reforestation industry.

Flash Forest uses aerial mapping software, drone technology, pneumatics, automation, ecological science to rapidly reforest post-harvest and post-wildfire areas. During pilot testing, Flash Forest used its manual firing mechanism to plant over 100 pods containing White Pine, White Birch, White Spruce, and Red Maple seeds in a Southern Ontario site. That number was increased by tenfold, proving the trials’ success.

Overall, Flash Forest successfully automated the planting of over 2,000 trees of seven species in Southern Ontario, it reports. This achievement was a breakthrough for the company as its planting rate increased to 165 trees planted in 3 minutes using just one drone. The company is on a mission to plant a billion trees using drones.
