This Automated CPR Device Saved a Man in Cardiac Arrest for Over 8 Hours

The LUCAS 3 Chest Compression System by Stryker is an automated CPR device that safely delivers guidelines-consistent, high-quality chest compressions under difficult conditions and for extended periods of time. This device can be used during ambulance or helicopter transport or maneuvering patients in a hospital and/or an OR.

The LUCAS has shown to significantly improve quality and increase the consistency of compressions when compared to manual CPR. Responders are able to assist patients more efficiently without being obstructed by a fellow responder delivering compressions. They also don’t have to compromise their own safety or suffer from back injuries while treating/transporting patients.



The LUCAS avoids neurological damage by allowing for increased blood flow to the brain. It has reportedly shown to improve blood flow to the brain compared to manual CPR in prehospital patients by 60%. This device saved a mountain climber in Italy who was in cardiac arrest for eight hours and 42 minutes.
