This is the Urban Rigger, a shipping container housing unit for students that is versatile, energy-efficient, and mobile. Designed by a world-renowned architect, Bjarke Ingels, the Urban Rigger has a shared green courtyard, kayak dock, bathing platform, and BBQ area, as well as a communal roof terrace.
There is also an impressive downstairs, below sea level where the pontoon (basement) consists of 12 storage rooms, a big lounge area, a kitchen, a technical room, and a shared fully-automated laundry. This innovative concept can easily be assembled in floating apartment blocks in various sizes.

The Urban Rigger was created as a solution for affordable housing for students in Copenhagen, where there is an abundance of waterways – from unused quays across the harbors, canals, and rivers. This “revolutionary floating dwelling system” has reportedly had a positive impact on the housing situation for students in Europe. Currently, there is a “fully functional floating village” consisting of 72 apartments.
