These charcoal capsules contain tree seeds to help with forest regeneration in Kenya.
Seedballs Kenya is on a mission to tackle deforestation in Kenya and East Africa since 2016. They have so far distributed over 8,410,500 seed balls that are inexpensive and can be easily dispersed over large areas that are hard to reach. The seeds are helping re-plant the country’s lost forests.

The seeds are protected in charcoal coating from predators and sun until rain triggers germination. The seed balls are thrown both from the air and ground in degraded areas with tree and grass species that have been partially or completely removed by man from the original environment.
This direct seeding reduces transplant shock and helps the young trees grow stronger roots which in turn helps them grow into stronger trees. This low-cost afforestation is helping the region rehabilitate damaged land and reintroduce tree species in an almost natural process.
