Nike’s Space Hippie Collection Uses Recycled Scraps to Create a Sneaker Inspired by Life on Mars

Nike’s Space Hippie Collection is a colorful and funky sneaker line that uses recycled scraps to make a high-performance shoe with a low carbon footprint. The creators of the Space Hippie Collection were inspired by life on Mars “where materials are scarce and there is no resupply mission.”

The hip footwear line based on the concept of sustainable practices-meet-radical design. Made of scraps, or what Nike calls, “space junk,” the line includes Flyknit yarns made from recycled plastic water bottles, T-shirts from the company, and Goodwill and yarn scraps. For example, a Nike swoosh symbol that was already embroidered was sewn onto a shoe.

The Nike Space Hippie Collection, which comes with or without shoelaces, also uses crater foam tooling that uses 15% Nike Grind rubber combined with 100% recycled foam materials. According to Nike, this creates a more sustainable, lightweight, and responsive feel while navigating the city – and beyond.
