Solar Foods created a new high-protein flour-like powder called Solein that’s made out of CO₂, water, and electricity. Made of 50% protein, 5–10% fat, and 20–25% carbs, Solein is reportedly 100 times more climate-friendly than meat and 10 times better than plants. It could also replace palm oil, prevent further deforestation, and feed billions.
Solein, which also bulks up bread and ice cream, extracts CO₂ from the air and combines it with water, nutrients, and vitamins using 100% renewable solar energy. Its natural fermentation is similar to yeast production and its fermenter is comparable to those used in breweries and wineries.

Expected to launch in 2021, Solein could become a widely-used ingredient beginning with protein shakes and yogurt with the goal to produce 2 million meals a year by 2023.
