These wheelchair ramps are made from lego bricks by a German grandma called Rita Ebel aka Lego Grandma.
Ebel who lives in the town of Hanua has been in a wheelchair for over 25 years after a bad car accident. She was inspired to start the project after a friend in a wheelchair couldn’t get out of a shop and had to be carried out by others. She decided to do something to make her town accessible.

She started to do some research and came across a picture of a woman in a medical journal who was using her wheelchair to go down a lego ramp. She uses recycled lego bricks donated to her from all over Germany and has so far installed 12 lego ramps throughout her hometown.
Each ramp is made out of hundreds of pieces of lego bricks and eight tubes of glue on Ebel’s mission to make her town barrier-free. Her story has raised awareness and interest from Spain, Germany and the US. Lego Grandma has made the project instructions available for others to follow.
