COVID-19-Inspired Social Distancing Technology Detects If You’re Standing Too Close

Back off and keep your distance! Landing AI has developed an AI-enabled, social distancing detection tool that can detect if the public is indeed practicing social distancing correctly. It analyzes real-time video streams from a camera.

While it may seem a little Big Brother-like, it’s invasive nature might be necessary as the pubic gets re-acclimated to “normal” life. Social distancing has been a proven and effective tool in the fight against Coronavirus as we anxiously await the arrival of a vaccine from our trusted scientists.

The social distancing detection tool’s camera system “calibrates the input and adjusts what it sees for perspective.” In other words, individual pedestrians are detected with a vertical “box” drawn around them. If two boxes come too close within each other, they are highlighted in red. A green box indicates an acceptable distance. Amazon has reportedly implemented similar technology in its warehouses.

The company is reportedly hoping to help certain workplaces monitor their employees’ social distancing to ensure they’re complying with the rules. A manager would keep an eye out to ensure the safety of his or her employees.
